The Spring That Remembers

How a single hydrocensus rekindled stewardship over thirteen natural springs in Nkandla.

When we began the hydrocensus, the elders told us the springs had names — names that had not been spoken in two generations. Reawakening these names became as essential as the protection works themselves. Today, thirteen springs are mapped, four are diverted to safer pools, and the women who walk to them at dawn no longer walk in fear.

Our pledge

Asilindi advocates for the recognition, protection and sustainable management of indigenous and community-based natural springs in underserved and historically neglected villages across Nkandla, advancing water justice, environmental justice and social justice for rural communities.
